Reflection3
Reflection: On Word
We made cardboard boxes that were three feet tall and wide and five inches in width. We cut out the shape of our letters to make them appear absent in the construction. Our group also painted the boxes completely black to give an absence of color.
For our locations we placed the letters on campus in places that are usually busy but took photographs when there was no one around. These pictures were the ones of the computer lab and the classroom. We also took a picture of our letters’ shadows to represent the absence of the box itself. Another photograph we did was setting the letters in front of Wescoe and having a long exposure time to allow people in the background to blur in motion. We wanted to create the absence of consciousness since most students run around campus not paying attention to their surroundings. Another picture was placing the letters in the empty display cases in the Arts and Design building. This was to resemble the absence of artwork that is usually displayed in the cases. We also placed the letters inside the lower level of Wescoe and allowed viewers to read the letters through the glass windows. To make the location fit the word more accurately we placed the ‘E’ separately from the rest by having it stand on the tope of the small staircase near by. This allowed for all the letters to show in the picture as well yet, have the ‘E’ absent from the rest.
I made my pictures black and white to reenforce the absence of color. I also brought the picture more contrast to highlight that absence and bring out the rich blacks which represent the lost color.

Reflection: Team Dynamics
During this project I learned how to work better in a group where more work was required. The first project with group work could be done without one or two group members however, this project required more team work which led to more patience. It was necessary to work as a whole because one person could not build letters on their own.
We also learned how to work efficiently as a whole. Each of us fed off each other’s ideas and continued to evolve and improved different aspects of our project such as better locations. Our group learned how to compromise with each other’s schedules and were flexible when building letters late at night.
We did run into some difficulties as every group did. We did not know at first how we wanted to construct our letters which is when small cardboard models helped. After getting the right measurements to allow the letters to freely stand, we proceeded to make them on a larger scale. Our problems also entailed having enough money to buy cardboard, duct tape, and paint. The usual plan was to all pitch in money and send Ryan Benedick to Walmart to pick up the necessary items. We also ran into problems setting up our letters while the weather was unpredictable. Luckily, Ryan had a large tarp that we could wrap our letters together and allowed us to carry them across campus without any major damage.
Although we ran into a couple of problems our group all helped to figure out a solution. Each team member took the responsibility to make sure they could put in all the help they could to make the project turn out the best that it could.
Reflection
Reflection: Parts of the Project:
Through this project I learned how to look at words differently and explore their meanings. I learned how to take a definition of a word and creatively construct a three-dimensional product to easily convey the meaning to viewers. The difficult part I thought was finding locations to put our words that were not so obvious. Our word was absent and we felt we could not keep putting the letters simply in a classroom. We did actually do that...however, we turned the lights off and took pictures with a flashlight to create a mere highlight of the letters.
Our group worked well to find solutions to problems such as this. We used mind maps to help our thoughts follow easily and did not shut any ideas down. Each of us had creative ideas that we wanted to share and through that construction of letters were made and locations were found.

Compositions
I felt as though my strongest designs were designs one, three, and nine. Design one is strong because the “c” is showing depth on a dark background which makes it stand out over the rest of the word and the entire document. The purple large band also creates a horizon line which sets up the “c” on a higher plane than the rest of the word because the “onquer” is underneath the entire purple band thus making the word depict its meaning stronger.
Design three is strong because the “c” is again dominating the word and the coloring of the letters plays an impact on this design. The large “c” is a light blue to represent a positive feel and the rest of the word has the light blue covering up most of the positive space of the word as it dominates the dark red on the bottom of the letters. The dark red is also supposed to symbolize a negative feel which is being conquered by the light blue.
Even though design nine is in black and white I feel it is strong due to the stark positive and negative area it covers. The large “c” is near the top and the rest of the document is black with “onquer” in the black space. This extreme contrast gives the simple definition of conquering as the letter is overcoming the black space with the white letters moving upward towards the white space as well.
My individual compositions suggest the meaning of my word by the placement of the word in the layout. In all my designs I placed the word in the top half of the layout. This showed in the simplest form the meaning of the word. I used color and size between the “c” and “onquer” to show the act of conquering. I also used contrasting colors in the letters all together over the background to show the meaning of the word. I also spread out the letters on a straight line when spelling “onquer” because it had a stronger meaning of conquering when the letters where taking up a larger space on the layout.
All the compositions together worked as a whole to give the complete definition of the word conquer because they were all designed with the word near the top of the layouts. They also all had contrasting colors to symbolize positive overcome or negative. The designs have different ways of conquering the layout such as light color covering up dark color in the positive space of the letter, light letters being spaced out over the dark background, and having the word over a horizon line in the layout.
